Dave Meets Fat Kitty
Meet Dave – a designer with a propensity for colorful, kawaii artwork and a fondness for classic rock. “I’m your average 16 year old boy trapped in the body of a 30 year old man,” he explains. Now meet Fat Kitty – a grumpy overweight tabby with a penchant for mischief. Together, the two have created some pretty fabulous illustrations. Dave was inspired to create Fat Kitty in 2009, when he moved into a new house in Stoke-on-Trent and noticed a chubby cat lounging in his yard. It turned out to be his neighbor’s and sadly, his name was not Fat Kitty, or even Lord Fatsington, but Oscar. Nevertheless, the idea of Fat Kitty was born. Dave loves to draw Fat Kitty having adventures and getting into trouble, and takes advantage of his grumpy nature to make him even more adorable.
Season’s Greetings from Fat Kitty
Fat Kitty is just one of the many characters Dave has drawn and sold at his Etsy shop, The Nosuch Disco. His likeness has been printed on t-shirts, iPhone cases, tote bags, and even MOO Greeting Cards. Dave chose MOO cards for their flexibility because he could order small batches with as many of his designs as he wanted.
Most recently, Dave has been adapting Fat Kitty for the holidays. “It was a tricky one, as he’s a simple white character and I wanted to place him on a snowy background. For this year's card he is a snowman/cat, which needed a bit of tinkering, but I think it has worked quite well. I tend to use traditional winter colors - I know that it might sound strange when we're talking about snow, but (without sounding too sentimental) there's a certain warmth to the holidays, and I try to capture that in my cards,“ explains Dave.
The cuteness of his cheerful artwork certainly has a heart-warming effect. “I've become less cynical about Christmas as I have gotten older, I like warm nights in with friends and family. Mulled wine and flavored beers, decorations and the excitement.” Hmm that’s funny, those are our favorite parts too! That and presents, of course.
